Just when the Braham Bombers thought the Rush City Tigers didn't have any gas left in their tank, the Tigers came screaming back to make the game interesting.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Tigers needle finally went to empty and the boys lost 69-54 in front of a full house in Braham.
At one point Braham stretched their lead 57-33 in the second half. But a surge lead by the sharp shooting and steals of sophomore guard Justin "Red" Bosman shrunk the Bombers lead.
After a slow first half, Bosman had a solid second half and ended with 13 points and four steals.
The Tigers used the tall presence of senior center and captain Isaac Roll, pounding the ball inside to take advantage of Braham's lack of a big man.
On the surge toward the end of the game, Roll said,
"We were coming back there for a bit and were feeling good, but we just couldn't pull through and didn't have enough," he said.
Roll finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
A key to the game for Roll was that the team didn't communicate.
"Jonah Dahlman walked right down the lane and scored and that just kind of took any momentum that we had," he said.
For head coach Jeremy Albright, what hurt the boys in the end was their inability to take care of the ball, as they turned the ball over 27 times. Braham had eight turnovers.
"We turned the ball over too many times and that is what got us out of the game early," Albright said.
Senior Andy Erickson echoed the same feeling.
"First half turnovers they were a real downer ... they brought the hole team down and we couldn't get things moving."
Erickson lead the team in scoring and rebounding. He finished the game with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
From the charity stripe, the boys shot 36 percent on 5 of 14 from the line.
With the loss, the boys fell to 4-3 overall and 2-4 in the Great River Conference.
All things considered, Albright thought both teams played hard the entire game.
"The kids didn't quit and battled back at different parts of the game," he said.
Up next, the boys play Hinckley Finlayson on the road Jan. 11.
